The Match - de_inferno

In June 2006 EDCSSL #5 sign ups were so overwhelming it was decided to run a cup alongside for all those teams that didn’t make it into the league. It was dubbed the Challenge Cup and now, over 2 years on and 6 challenge cups later, Be Broadband have supplied 3,000 pounds as a prize for the seventh challenge cup. 1,500 to the winners, 1,000 to second place and 250 each to third and fourth. On the 19th of October 256 teams had been reduced to just two; Zboard and Level of Detail.

lod.css entered the game with low expectations, the game was a mere formality according to them. Zboard were too strong for any team in the event and 1,000 pounds for second place was already an amazing prize. Nevertheless as the game began lod.css looked organised in the knife round and won comfortably, taking the usually bias CT side and racking up a good lead was the only way they could imagine winning. A fast 4 man rush to the B bombsite by Zboard easily secured the first round with only 1 player down. The following 2 rounds were going through the motions with no money meaning no guns for lod.css. The fourth round, the first full buy for both teams saw Zboard set up using the same tactic fnatic.css had used to great success in their heyday. No surprise really as two of the Zboard members, darky and proph, were both ex fnatic players. 2 pushing banana, 1 holding middle, 1 high door and 1 into the window to the boiler room proved successful as a timed attack meant lod.css stood no chance and were dispatched in a matter of seconds.

As the rounds progressed lod.css lost their underdog spirit and their hope. Instead of getting angry about it they obviously decided to have some fun. By the 8 th round all the CT players were equipped with shotguns, a choice of weapon probably never seen before in the final of any event for money. By catching Zboard off guard they manage to claw a round from nothing using shotguns and sheer luck. If anything this just infuriated Zboard who decided to move the game onwards quickly, sticking to the same plan they out aimed lod.css at every opportunity and as the rounds ticked over fatal and proph decided to take up shotguns and automatic sniper rifles. The half ended light heartedly with four CT’s sitting atop a teammates head in the high door all equipped with shotguns. Lod.css now 14-1 down on the stronger side of the map knew the game was over and just wanted to get away, asking the 100 or so spectators why they were watching such a show, did they enjoy slow painful death from the fumes of drying paint?

First half score: Zboard 14 - 1 lod.css

If Zboard secured the pistol round the game would be over sooner rather than later, an aggressive push caught the terrorists off guard and they fell before they even knew what was happening. Everybody bought mp5s as this was match point. After exchanging kills it came down to jaFro vs raL. A smoke grenade thrown at an insane angle dropped a foot from raL making him turn around just as jaFro popped out to finish him, and the game.

Second half score: Zboard 2 - 0 lod.css

Zboard win 16 - 1

Strong favourites from the start Zboard lived up to the hype and made a final look very much like a first round game. lod.css seemed happy with their efforts in the event, securing 1,000 for themselves and an exciting run up to what was an anti-climatic finale.

Be There Challenge Cup #7 was Sponsored by: Be There Broadband – The gaming broadband expert – http://www.bethere.co.uk

Winners:

Zboard - 1,500 pounds
lod.css - 1,000 pounds
